Can you guys help Koala? He wants to open a bagel shop in Abu Dhabi and I for one do not mind if he does

Message from Koala:

Hello there fellow Canadian. In response to your posting on new businesses needed in AD, I would like to inform you that I am currently working on opening a bagel deli & bakery. That being said, I was wondering if you would help me get some market research in by writing a post asking your readers how they would feel about having a proper bagel place in AD. Since AD is filled with expats I thought it was a safe bet that most of them would be delighted :) i miss my bagels!!!

Consider it done Koala. Comment one: I would visit your shop at least once of week. After I wrote that post I googled "home-made bagels". You know what? Making bagels looks to be a long, complicated process. No wonder I've left it to the experts all these years!

It would be even better if you would sell different flavours of cream cheese too, while you are at it. Now if we could just get going on that diner...

I missed them in Qatar too. My best friend was a pastry chef and used to bake anything she wanted. We thought of having a little shop with bagels, a variety of cream cheese and smoked salmon. Well, you know the deal. Anyway we were told that the gov. in Qatar would not allow Jewish food. So that was that! We found the smoked salmon and the cream cheese Maybe AD is more progressive...

I wouldn't mind driving down to Abu-Dhabi if Crullers, Croissants, and Brioche are also on the menu.

I totally agree with the cream cheese part; toasted bagel and cream cheese; yummy :) I bet i'll be a regular customer.

But, I dont think a deli shop is the best idea in a country where you have many options ranging from Subway to shawarma stores, or from falafel shops to cafeterias. Why not open a pastry shop with bagels, cakes, danish, croissants, etc, all different kinds of them, from different countries; instead of a deli. My dream shop in Abu Dhabi is a place where I could find quality pastries, sweets.. Its a shop I could smell it from a few blocks away :)

@ the above comment, I agree with you! I loved going to bakeries when I went to Germany and I always tell my friends how awesome it'd be to have something in here like that.

I think this thing is for anyone, it doesn't limit any age or cross any lines with any religion as far as I can see so I it's a successful idea in my opinion. :)

Considering that "Bagels" probably originated in Palestine and are still a part of our diet in the Arab world, why not call them Kaa'ik (كعك) and give it a local twist?

It would be refreshing to see Arabic names, foods and brands becoming cool in the ARAB world.
